Creating Space for New Responses and Healing

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom - Viktor Frankl

We have a choice how we respond to things and circumstances that may not be comfortable or what we deem as positive. When we are in the throes of pain, discomfort, or dis-ease, we can go towards our automatic response that says what it always says about that story that can be negative or distressful continuing the story of our discomfort or we can start to try to see the circumstance differently. Just like when we see this flower where we may initially see it as rough and jagged, we can be with it a bit and maybe start to see it differently, perhaps as a thing of beauty even with the rough edges. In our practices, we learn how to redirect and reprogram our responses from the simple act of creating a space between the stimuli and the response; a pause to notice and then decide what story we tell ourselves. This space is a powerful force because it allows us to choose a new path or response and shift towards how we want to be now and not how we have already been with our condition or the cirucumstance. It creates an opportunity of exploration rather than a place of feeling confined and stuck as you learn new ways to help yourself. A new way of being with yourself and a new way towards healing.

Peace in our Bodies and Minds

May we have peace
In our bodies and minds
May this thread of ease
Sink through our tissues
Beyond our identities
Into our cells of life

Rejuvenating our minds
Encouraging our hearts
Gentle fabric of warmth
Nourishing, securing, stabilizing

Steering our actions
Towards kindness and softness
Inviting our thoughts
Towards confidence and clarity
Steadying both
Through pause and reflection

I give thanks today
For all who have stood before me
Fighting their own battles
Big or small

For the wisdom
That can come
Through strife and discontent
And the small leap of faith
That can come trickling out
Pervading our depths
Comforting the soul

The Finite Nature of Life

Two of my dearest beings have conditions that are not curable and the clock is not in their favor. What I am finding is that the more we know about the finiteness of life, the more we can live everyday with awareness, purpose, and love. Maybe the best gift we can receive is the knowledge that everything changes and the beings that make our lives seem solid and whole will shift and depart and that puts us directly through the door of Now. I hope we all can take the moments in our lives and live them consciously so that we put out our best self and hearts all of the time, now. Best is not always shining and positive, but best may be what is real in the moment and not being afraid to share our realness with others. In the end, I want to know I lived with active choices, purpose, and love because there will be an end to what we know in the physical sense. Why not live this life with the fullness of you, every moment, for the time being, allowing our legacies to be representative of how we best chose to live our lives and love those who are in it?

Prayer for this Day

Thank you for this day

A new day for opportunities

A day to smile at the sun

A day to lovingly attend to my body

A day to to soothe my mind

A day for quiet courage

A day for resting completely

Thank you for this day

May light shine into me

And through me

May sacred essence light up mine

And be my compass

May sacred guidance fill me up

Dispelling mistrust

Encouraging faith and contentment

Overcoming Hardship- (Author Unknown)

The journey that each human being makes through earthly existence can have hardship as often as it is touched by joy. When we encounter adversity, the stress we feel can erode our optimism, eventually convincing us that the issues we face cannot be overcome. In truth, there is no situation so dire, no challenge so great, and no choice so bewildering that it cannot be overcome.

How to find unconditional happiness during good and bad times? Samtosa, one of the niyamas, can be a powerful ally

I used to wonder what the source of perpetually happy people was and where on earth did they store what was there in this place? I can understand when all is going well in someone’s life that of course, all you can do is smile. But how about when things are going not so well, and maybe pretty bad, how can people muster up the ability to be and stay positive?
